An Essential Headache

I'm sorting and backing up my entire photo collection currently. It is a complete pain, as well as never ending. But I have to do it. I'm running low on hard drive space. I know this is just an excuse to not be posting, but it is rather valid in this circumstance. Anyway, I'm going to post two shots and that will be it until this time consuming task is complete.

This is a tree leaning over the creek on our property. As a kid I always wanted to tie a swing onto it but it is not structurally sound. Plus the water is near freezing all year round.
I ajusted the white balance on this one to make it warmer.

This is out the back door of my old Montreal pad. I can't tell if there is a person on the top balcony of the white building because the original shot is only 1200x1600.

Lucky.

I'm running short on time today (surprise, surprise). So I'm posting one of my favorite shots.
Taken with my old point and shoot Minolta DiMAGE X, I saw this photo while taking out the trash in my old place in Montreal. I was quite fortunate that the neighbors did not come home that night as I never saw this opportunity again. Man were my hands cold.

Quarry Safari

I've put together some photos which I took last September at an open house at a nearby quarry.

This is a HUGE conveyor belt that runs the stones out onto a special transport ship.

Here is where the ship docks.

Dramatic shadows always go well with industrial scenery. Maybe its possible to tell what time it is by the angle of the shadows if you get your handy protractor.

I really wish I had a lot of wall space and a sweet, sweet printer for panoramas. I would love to print this out after fine tuning it in Photoshop.

A kinda eerie photo.... perhaps because the subject is facing away and the frame is dominated by cold shapes.

There were tons of kids ruinning around and freaking out about the huge vehicles. They were rather funny.

and at long last, my favorite shot of the session.

All things shiny.

Reflections are a favorite photographic subject of mine. I believe they tie into my love of abstract photography. Cutting anymore blabbing about reflections short I will hop straight to the photos.

This was taken during the painting of my Dad's MGB. The image would not be nearly as interesting without the partial reflections that got mixed in because of the pane of glass between us.

This was taken on a pasta-making break during a study binge. Reflections like the one above alter perspective so much that photos including them require much more thought and therefore, they become more enjoyable to view. (At least that's what I think, without revising sentences.)

I repeat, reflections assist with abstractism. Anybody have any difficulty realizing what this shot is?

I like this self-portrait because my old Minolta turned into a Gothic cross. If you live in Quebec you probably can tell that I took this in the side of a La Belle Provience restaurant.

Weekend in T.O.

Having spent the weekend in 'the big smoke' I will post some city picts from the trip.

traveling gives so many opportunities to take pictures, so I was rather upset at the "colder then most of this winter" weather. I only took a couple dozen shots and kinda felt bad for exposing my camera to such low temps. Here is a familiar tower. I'm getting more comfortable with my polarizer, which is good fun with clouds.

On the left is a shot around,.. well... I forget actually. I know it is south of UofT and north of Queen St and east of Spadina, so there you go. I liked the mosaic effect of the TTC lines... it's kinda subtle.

I spent a couple hours sitting in cafes and people watching (one of my favorite things to do). While sitting I got to play with my camera settings and take a bunch of monochromatic picts. I also drank a lot of Bavarian Dutch Chocolate coffee!

Warmer Times

My feet are cold so I'm going to post something from warmer times. Ahhhh... here we go:

A morning glory should do. This was taken with my Dad's Canon A75.

Choppy Panoramas

I read digital photography magazines every once in while and I've never come across any articles relating to imperfect panoramas. I have seen edgy panas in National Geographic and some photo books so maybe I shouldn't expect popular photo mags to approach them. Anyway, I like fragmented panas... and my proof will be displayed as time goes by.

This shot is taken in one of the many, many cool looking back alleys in Montreal.

The Great Tom

In a previous post I've mentioned how I am able to sculpt Tom into almost any position for a good cat shot. It helps if he is asleep.
Statistics have shown that this is one of my best cat shots.

Before I bought my Rebel XT, and before I even purchased my now-broken Minolta Dimage X, I borrowed my Dad's old Fujifilm 1400z (or something like that), which is what I used to take this shot.

Winter Photofest #2.

I took a bunch of shots outside on Monday. Here are two.

This is of the waterfall on our property. I'm rather impressed with myself considering that this is a handheld shot for 8/5ths of a second. As a kid I never got into film too much as it was too expensive for my shaky hands. But my hands and sly photographer stance have improved. (Plus I bought an image stabilized lens.)

I LOVE abstract photography. Even though this shot isn't really that abstract it somewhat reminds me of a Diebenkorn.

Catching Up.

After saying that I was going to try and post a photo a day I have done a less-than-stellar job with keeping up. So today I will post numerous photos.

This is Montreal at dusk. If you look really closely you can see smug Quebecers paying next to nothing for tutition.

I wish I knew the name of the plant in this shot. It is taller than me (66.584% of plants are), and has green leaves that eventually turn red as you approach the top. I should ask my Dad... he would know. And he did: it is a Smoke Tree.

About a year ago I was making fresh ginger tea and noticed that my ginger root looked kinda like a baby eagle.... so I took a shot of it. (I like the lighting.)

We have a pond in our back yard and around 500 pictues of it on my harddrive. No matter how many shots we take of it there are always more that inspire us. (especially now that I bought a polarizer lens)

I couldn't let a big photo post go up without a shot from Beautiful British Columbia. If you go to Emerald Lake, in Yoho and hike to Hamilton lake around dusk you will find this scene waiting for you (with lots of bugs).

Moon and Mount Dennis

This is the moon over the side of Mount Dennis in Yoho National Park. I remember another photographer and I quaffing brewskies, then peering out the window seeing this sight and rushing to grab our cameras and take some shots. The scramble was worth it!

Behold!

I have been recently inspired by some photoblogs to try to post an image a day. I probably won't be completely adherent to the rule, but it will make for more posts.

Today's Photo: Myself... taken in Montreal.
